Policy Brief: Promoting the Use of Organic Fertilizers for Sustainable Agriculture in Tanzania
Agriculture is vital to Tanzania’s economy, employing about 65% of the population and contributing 27% to the national GDP. However, the sector struggles with issues like soil degradation and reduced productivity, partly due to heavy reliance on chemical fertilizers. While effective in the short term, chemical fertilizers harm soil health over time.
Policy Brief: Efforts to Promote Agroforestry Practices in Tanzania
Agroforestry, which involves integrating trees into farming landscapes, offers transformative potential for smallholder farming in Tanzania. The Civic Social Protection Foundation (CSP), a technical partner of Vi Agroforestry, is actively advocating for agroforestry adoption through the Agroforestry for Sustainable Livelihoods and Biodiversity (ASILI-B) Programme. This initiative aims to foster sustainable livelihoods, food security, and biodiversity conservation. Globally, agroforestry is acknowledged as a means to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) like zero hunger, climate action, and life on land.
policy brief: A Path to Climate Resilience through Agroforestry and Budget Reform
Tanzania’s agriculture is under pressure. Farmers face challenges from unpredictable weather, land degradation, and farming methods that harm the environment. The 2021 Agricultural Census showed that 18 out of every 100 farmers see climate change as their biggest problem. Other major issues include the high cost of farming inputs and limited access to land. Agroforestry, which means growing trees alongside crops or animals, is one of the best ways to tackle these problems. It improves soil, provides food, supports biodiversity, and helps farmers adapt to climate change. Tanzania has already shown commitment through the National Agroforestry Strategy 2024 to 2031. But this strategy needs stronger support to succeed.
Policy Brief : Addressing Challenges for Smallholder Farmers in Kagera and Mara Regions under the ASILI-B Programme
Smallholder farmers in Tanzania, particularly in the Kagera and Mara regions, face significant challenges that impede their productivity and livelihoods. This policy brief, based on a survey conducted by the Civic Social Protection Foundation (CSP) under the ASILI-B Programme, highlights key issues and provides evidence-based recommendations to guide policymakers toward sustainable solutions.
Policy Brief : Strengthening the National Climate Change Response Strategy (2021-2026) for Agricultural Resilience in Tanzania
The National Climate Change Response Strategy (NCCRS) (2021-2026) is a key policy document that aims to enhance Tanzania’s resilience to the adverse impacts of climate change. In June 2024, the Civic Social Protection Foundation (CSP) in partnership with Vi Agroforestry, conducted a policy analysis workshop to sensitize Local Government Authorities (LGAs) and core partners on implementing NCCRS, particularly in the agriculture sector.
PO BRIEF-Modernizing Tanzania’s Agriculture
Agriculture is still one of the most important parts of Tanzania’s economy. It helps people earn a living, adds to the country’s income, and makes sure families have enough food. But the main policy guiding this sector, the National Agriculture Policy of 2013, is now outdated. It no longer fits with the current situation, the new institutions, or Tanzania’s development goals.
Enhancing Accountability in Agroforestry and Sustainable Agriculture, A Policy Brief on Social Accountability Monitoring (SAM) in Tanzania
The Civic Social Protection Foundation (CSP), as a technical partner to Vi Agroforestry under the Agroforestry for Sustainable Livelihoods and Biodiversity (ASILI-B) Programme, has been working to enhance social accountability in agroforestry, food security, and climate change adaptation in Tanzania. Through Social Accountability Monitoring (SAM), CSP has engaged local governments and communities in monitoring resource allocation, policy implementation, and project performance to improve agricultural practices and biodiversity conservation. The SAM approach is particularly critical in ensuring transparency and accountability in public resource management.
